Christian Community Service

This is a reminder to those students that have not started their Christian Community Service for this year. Every year of high school each student should complete at least ten hours of Community Service. During the Advent season there are many opportunities to complete your volunteer hours, but remember to check to see if the activity is eligible. Many for-profit companies or groups will run fundraisers or activities to help non-profit organizations within the community and therefore these activities are eligible for Christian Community Service. If you are uncertain, ask to confirm the eligibility.

If your son/daughter is Graduating this year please encourage them to complete their community service as quickly as possible as it is a requirement for graduation and 48 students have yet to start. Congratulations to all those students that completed their forty hours and continue to volunteer within the community. For more information, please visit cn.hwcdsb.ca.

Miles For Smiles!

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students

The "Miles for Smiles," is a charity Cycling Event that has been held in Hamilton for the past 20 years in support of Good Shepherd Youth Services. The charity benefits homeless and troubled youths in Hamilton by raising money from a charitable bike ride (or run/walk).

The ride begins from Confederation Park and follows a paved scenic path all the way to downtown Burlington and back. This year it is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. The ride is 20 kilometres in length, however, you can choose to run, walk or ride any distance you wish. The goal is to raise money for a good cause.

The Good Shepherd Charity is able to provide 5 hours of community service hours for each student that takes part in the event. One stipulation is that each student must raise a minimum of $50.00 in order to qualify for the community service hours.

Please see Mr. Esposto in the attendance office for pledge, permission, and registration forms.

School Evacuation Update!

School Evacuation Update!

On Monday, June 16th, at the beginning of period 5, one of our sprinkler systems was inadvertently activated in a classroom. This was not due to the result of a fire. The incident did cause some water damage to some of our classrooms. The entire student body and staff had to be evacuated for approximately 45 minutes.

At the time of the evacuation, some students were writing in-class exams. Also, many students were not able to go to their lockers on the east side of the building due to the water damage, and did not have access to their lockers to obtain their books. Therefore, these in-class exams and any in-class exams scheduled for Tuesday, June 17 will be re-scheduled for Wednesday, June 18th.

Please note, that the school is open on Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18 and both are regular school days. Please note, this does not impact the regular exam schedule which begins on Thursday, June 19th. For more information please visit cn.hwcdsb.ca

The common dress code has a positive effect on school identity, unity and pride. The uniform serves to promote our image in the community. It enhances security in the school. It reduces peer pressure and cost in terms of school attire. If one is proud to attend Cardinal Newman, one should be proud to wear its uniform.

As aforementioned, students must be in full school uniform at all times on campus, please refer to pages 25 and 26 of the Student Agenda Book. The information within includes the school policies and procedures, a calendar of school events and the code of student behaviour. The agenda book provides an easy planning format for recording and prioritizing homework, assignments and tests. It can also be used as another means of communicating with the school. The agenda book is also available on-line at cn.hwcdsb.ca.

On Tuesday, September 3rd school will begin at 8:00 a.m. sharp and all students are expected to be in full uniform.
